What is Mouth to Lung and Direct to Lung vaping?
When you start vaping you start hearing a bunch of new terms. Two of these are MTL and DLT, known as Mouth to Lung and Direct to Lung vaping. Both MTL and DTL refer to the way you inhale or draw on your vape, and both are very distinct vaping styles.
Mouth To Lung (MTL)
If you have no interest in making huge clouds of vapour, and want a similar experience to smoking than MTL is probably going to be more up your alley. You can only fit so much breath in your mouth and therefore the MTL method won’t have you seeing substantial vapour production, or make you feel like you need to cough (though when you first start vaping, you will cough a little). The advantage of this is a better flavour. You’ll get a real sense of the flavour profile and mouthfeel. MTL is also a more economical way of vaping, as it vapourises less e-liquid than a sub ohm tank (oh no, what are sub ohms? We’ll cover this at a later date, so keep an eye on our blog).
How do you vape MTL?
This may sound like a simple question but it’s worth answering. MTL vaping is the closest to smoking a cigarette but with a slight difference. So how do you do it correctly?
- Take a smooth draw of vapour into the mouth (it’s important that you don’t take short, sharp drags like you would a cigarette).
- Once the vapour is in the mouth, inhale into the lungs drawing air in at the same time.
Direct To Lung (DTL)
As known as Straight to Lung, DTL vaping is the complete opposite of MTL. And it can take some getting use to. Your first DTL will shock your lungs, but if you start at low wattage and tight airflow and slowly open up, you’ll be able to get use to it over time.
DTL lets you make HUGE clouds. HUGE. The clouds you produce will blow the minds of your vape enthusiast friends, the older generation will look at you like your crazy and the rest will pretend to be annoyed but secretly envy you and your god-like clouds.
On a more serious note if you’re looking for full, creamy and thick cloud and a solid lungful of tasty vapour, then DTL is the way to go. Using DTL also allows you to enjoy the scope of high wattage mods and sub-ohm tanks. In short DTL is for vapers who love vaping, who have overcome their cigarette craving, and those who love messing around with high-powered box mods, vape tanks and gear.
How do you vape DTL?
- Draw slow and steady breaths directly into your lungs (around 3 to 5 seconds). Don’t take sharp drags, smooth and steady is key.
- Once it reaches your lungs exhale those clouds!
Whatever method of vaping you choose will be down to your personal preference, your personal needs and your level of experience. The most important thing to remember is that any type of vaping is good if it helps you make the switch from smoking.
